Challenges, solutions & proof

What's Your Dot Peen Marking Challenge?

Select your challenge to see the problem, how dot peen solves it, and proof it works.

Your Marks Aren't Surviving the Process

The problem

Marks fade after painting, become unreadable after heat treatment, or corrode in the field. Parts get rejected, reworked, or returned - and every incident costs time, money, and customer trust.

$2,500+
Per quality incident
100%
Scrap on failed marks
How we solve it
  • We mark your part with multiple dot peen depth and force settings we're confident will survive your post-process - paint, powder coat, heat treat
  • Multiple parameter settings marked on your real part
  • You get the marked part back to run through your own process and confirm the mark survives
  • Dot peen drives the characters deep into the metal, so they survive where surface marks burn off, wear, or corrode away

The Challenge

Traditional Laser Enclosures Were Cost-Prohibitive on a Live Assembly Line

Ford's Livonia, Michigan transmission plant needed to permanently mark every transmission case with 2D Data Matrix codes and human-readable serial data - directly in the flow of the line. Traditional flash lamp laser markers required massive safety enclosures that ate floor space, stopped production, and cost too much to justify. Ford needed a fundamentally different approach: smaller, faster, Class 1 safe, and line-integrated.

The Solution

The Safety Seal - The Part Itself Becomes the Sixth Wall

  • Patented vacuum-seal design - transmission case surface forms the light-tight enclosure
  • CDRH Class 1 laser-safe - no large guarding, no expensive enclosures required
  • Marks at 3,000 mm/s (250 characters per second) across a 5″×5″ marking field
  • Compact footprint integrates directly into active assembly flow - no line disruption
  • Marks verified at multiple predetermined checkpoints along the transmission line

Ford has been focused on implementing traceability solutions across all of our production. Ford will utilize this laser marked data for tracking information to maintain process control to help ensure that the manufacturing of our vehicles is of the highest quality.

The Challenge

Deep Marks AND Short Cycle Times - No Other Vendor Could Deliver Both

Badger Meter is a leading manufacturer of flow measurement products. Their brass water meters need a unique serial number marked deep enough that a field technician can read it years later after the meter is installed underground. At high volume - 3 shifts/day, 5-6 days/week - that means zero compromise on speed. Every vendor tested before Brady Marking could deliver depth or speed. Not both. Badger needed a system that would run hard without breaking down and mark with precision every single cycle.

The Solution

SuperFast Vibra Peen + Two Custom-Engineered Station Configurations

  • SuperFast 100×17 with N20 marking head - very deep marks at up to 16 characters/second
  • Only vendor tested that simultaneously hit required depth AND short cycle time
  • Custom-designed index table rotary workstation for standalone high-volume marking
  • SuperFast U-Model integrated directly into production assembly lines
  • Low maintenance, high reliability - built for demanding 24/5 production environments

They were the only vendor that could achieve a high-quality, deep mark within our required short-cycle marking time. We needed both - and most vendors could only give us one.

The Challenge

Hand-Stamping a 17-Digit Serial on Every Machine Was Slow and Inconsistent

At its Shippensburg, Pennsylvania division, Ingersoll Rand hand-stamped a 17-digit serial number onto every machine. The manual process was slow, the stamps fractured in use - an injury hazard for operators - and the results were inconsistent: variable quality, placement errors, and rapid tool wear. A continuous-improvement project set out to remove the hand stamp entirely and bring repeatable, controlled marking to the line.

The Solution

Eight Couth SuperFast Portable Dot-Peen Systems, Computer-Controlled

  • Eight computer-controlled SuperFast systems installed to replace the hand-stamping operation
  • Portable design - marking head with a tethered control unit positioned up to 30 ft away, with keyboard input
  • Marks the full 17-character VIN in less than 30 seconds - consistent quality and placement every cycle
  • 2D Data Matrix capable - the industry's fastest portable dot-peen marker

A Three-Coat Anti-Corrosion Paint System Buried Every Hand-Stamped ID

Walkup Co. is a Southwestern-US fabricator marking oil-field parts - belt guards, brackets, and covers. A three-coat anti-corrosion paint system buried the hand-stamped IDs, so operators had to stamp twice or inspectors issued non-conformance reports. A typical mark runs about 20 characters - human-readable, plus occasional serialization. Hand-stamp errors and re-deepening drove up cost, and hand marking also caused injuries. They needed marks deep enough to survive the paint, applied fast, without putting operators at risk.

The Solution

The COUTH N-34 Series Dot Peen - Deep Marks That Survive the Paint

  • COUTH N-34 Series heavy-duty deep marking - available portable, integrated, or combination
  • Marking 20 characters dropped from "a lot of time" to about 5 seconds
  • The T2 controller auto-increments serial numbers for occasional serialization
  • Magnet attachment plus a small marking head reach awkward areas on the part
  • Result: major time savings and reduced injury and medical costs versus hand stamping

We have been pleased with the performance of our Brady equipment and the quality marks it produces. For oil field related marking needs, there simply isn't a better machine for the job.

Marks Had to Survive Paint - Without Creating Cracking Points in the Steel

American Bridge Manufacturing in Pittsburgh, PA has fabricated new bridges and rehabilitation parts for over 100 years. State regulations require all members to be marked legibly after a three-coat paint process. Hand stenciling was slow, labor-intensive, injury-prone, and had to be tailored per piece. The key constraint: any automated process had to be low-impact to avoid stress risers - cracking points - in the steel, yet deep enough to survive paint.

The Solution

SuperFast With an H-Controller and a 5-lb Portable N20 Head

  • Brady Marking's SuperFast with an H-Controller and portable N20 head - tested deep, clean, and legible
  • Low-impact marking produced no stress risers - no new cracking points in the steel
  • Marks deep enough to remain clearly legible after the three-coat paint process
  • 5-lb portable head adapts to all shapes and sizes; online for two years
  • Fewer hand injuries and meaningful project-cost savings - thousands of lacing bars marked via the H-Controller

…the finished product, a fully-painted fabricated member, had a clearly legible impression… the hours of labor we saved were dramatic.

The Challenge

Gray-Market and Counterfeit Breakers Threaten Revenue and Safety

Counterfeit and diverted electrical components are a large, growing problem across the industry - not a niche one. Industry research (KPMG / AGMA) finds OEM gray-market losses run roughly 15-20% of potential revenue, 60% of OEMs report increased gray-market activity, and 90% have found their products outside approved channels; in a single April 2026 action, U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized more than $150,000 of counterfeit electronics. Against that backdrop, a multinational power-management OEM needed to protect its circuit breakers - and its brand - by making each part verifiably authentic and very hard to clone. (Figures above are industry context, not this manufacturer's results.)

The Solution

Preemptive, Marking-Based Brand Protection Etched Into Every Part

  • Overt + covert marks laser-etched directly into each breaker's molded plastic case
  • SMARTmark Fiber with rotary indexing + integrated vision identifies each part by barcode and marks up to four sides
  • Marking data pulled automatically from the manufacturer's ERP database
  • iTRACE 2DMI suite adds encrypted, proprietary data (footprint < 0.25 mm) that counterfeiters can't reproduce
  • The OEM keeps full production control on-site - no cloud dependency

Frequently Asked Questions

Real Answers From the People Who Build the Systems

Answers sourced from our applications engineering, integration, compliance, and field service teams - including the uncomfortable ones. If you don't find yours, send us your part and we'll answer it one-on-one.

Dot peen (pin) marking drives a carbide stylus into the surface to form characters, logos, and 2D Data Matrix codes out of indented dots. Because the mark is physically displaced into the metal - not sitting on top of it - it's about as permanent as marking gets.

Dot peen marks routinely stay readable after powder coat, three-coat paint, sandblasting, galvanizing, and heat treat. Komatsu and American Bridge use ours specifically because the marks read after the final paint coat. Send us your part, we'll mark it, run it through your finishing process if you like, and show you what survives.

Dot peen wins when you need maximum depth and durability on metal - marks that survive aggressive finishing, on cast, forged, or fabricated parts, including round and curved surfaces. It's typically the lowest-cost entry into permanent marking and is forgiving on rough or uneven stock.

Laser wins when you need high speed, fine detail, high-contrast 2D codes, or no surface indentation on small or finished parts. Many shops run both. The honest answer for your specific part is what the free sample is for - send it and we'll mark it both ways and let the results decide.

Yes. BAE Systems uses our fiber laser and dot peen systems for Bradley vehicle component marking under MIL-STD-130N. We size the 2D data matrix per the standard, encode Issuing Agency Code + Enterprise Identifier + Serial Number per Construct 1 or 2, and verify with Cognex to AIM DPM-1-2006 Grade B or better.

We also support MIL-STD-130N Change 1's updated syntax. If you're supplying to a specific DoD program with supplementary requirements, send us the contract data requirement and we'll match it.

Honest ranges, no hiding behind "contact us":

  • Benchtop or portable dot peen - the lowest-cost entry into permanent marking; quoted to your part and volume
  • Integrated marking cell (vision verification, PLC integration, ERP connection) - typically $75-150K
  • Custom automated cell (robotic loading, rotary indexing, safety guarding) - $200K+

These are ballparks - your final quote depends on integration depth, verification requirements, and automation level. We quote explicitly and itemized.

Typical turnaround is 3-5 business days from the day your part arrives in our Cranberry, PA lab. That includes marking your part across multiple technologies, photographing the results, writing your feasibility report, and shipping the part back with sample marks.

One part is enough for a basic feasibility test. Three to five is ideal. A Brady Marking applications engineer follows up within 1 business day of form submission.

Usually yes - typical payback is 12-24 months when replacing legacy methods. Specifically:

  • Hand stamps - eliminated injury risk, 10-20x speed improvement, consistent mark quality regardless of operator
  • Ink jet - no consumables, no smudging or wear, permanent traceability
  • Labels - no relabeling, no adhesive failures, direct compliance with UDI and MIL-STD-130

Send us your part with a photo of your current marking method and we'll show you the permanent alternative side by side.
